Nigeria’s secret police releases all detained judges on bail
The State Security Service (SSS) has released the seven judges, including two justices of the Supreme Court, who were arrested on suspicion of bribery and corruption last week.

Trump fends off sexism claims in Clinton debate
Donald Trump has launched a televised assault on former president Bill Clinton in a bid to salvage his own White House hopes.
The Republican presidential candidate went on the attack in his second debate with Hillary Clinton in St Louis.
In an ill-tempered 90-minute clash, Mr Trump responded to revelations of his boasts about how he treats women.
"What he's done to women, there's never been anybody in the history of politics in this nation that's been so abusive to women."
He said Mrs Clinton "should be ashamed of herself" for her support of her husband.
Mr Trump had invited four women who have made accusations against the Clintons to take seats in the debate audience. They included Paula Jones and Juanita Broaddrick, who have both made high-profile claims.
Mrs Clinton quoted Michelle Obama in her response: "When they go low, we go high."
She accused Mr Trump of diversion tactics "because of the Republicans deserting his campaign".
Dozens of senior Republican figures have distanced themselves from Mr Trump over the recording of his 2005 comments. Some have urged him to leave the race.
He said he had never assaulted women and repeated his apology for the 'locker room banter'. He said: "I'm not proud of it."
"I have great respect for women. Nobody has more respect for women." He added.

VAN GAAL'S MAN UTD LEGACY SECURED BY LINGARD'S WEMBLEY STUNNER
has not always been popular during his two years at Old Trafford, but a goal by one of the young players he gave a chance may have given him a finale
And whether Van Gaal eventually remembers his spell at Old Trafford with fondness or with regret, he will always thank Lingard for the stunning goal against Crystal Palace which settled the FA Cup in United’s favour.
Lingard’s emergence in the autumn was the first lasting sign that Van Gaal was prepared to give youth a chance. He had flirted with the use of younger players in times of adversity during his first campaign, but when Lingard got a decent run in the United first XI earlier this term it suggested the Dutchman really wanted him around for keeps.
Lately, of course, it has been Marcus Rashford creating the headlines, but even during a relatively quiet spell for Lingard his manager has persevered with him in the squad. If this is to be Van Gaal’s only piece of silverware before making way for a new boss, he can at least say he had a massive say in earning it.
The Jose Mourinho rumours will remain until United finally make a decision either way what they are likely to do, but if Van Gaal is asked to meet with the decision-makers at Old Trafford in the days to come he will have more than just semantics in his favour.
There was a rumour before Saturday’s game that United would appoint the Portuguese on Monday regardless of the result, but it would be a shock if a club which prides itself on its PR was to immediately follow a cup triumph with talk of regime change.
In many ways, their victory was typical of their season. A high rate of possession, a low shot rate but an ability to pull off a result just when they looked down and out.
Referee Mark Clattenburg had stolen the attention in the first half, twice halting promising Palace attacks in order to call back play and award the Eagles free-kicks instead. If Alan Pardew’s side felt aggrieved by half-time, they will have soon been feeling fortunate after watching Marouane Fellaini and Anthony Martial find the woodwork from decent efforts.
There was nothing lucky about Jason Puncheon’s wonderful strike which put Palace ahead with just 12 minutes remaining, but within three minutes they had been pegged back after falling asleep at the far post and allowing Juan Mata to steer home Fellaini’s knock-down after great work by Wayne Rooney.
After Chris Smalling saw red on the stroke of the turnaround in extra-time, United were back up against it again but came up with the perfect response for a second time. When Antonio Valencia’s low cross was half-cleared, the volleyed response from Lingard was as emphatic as it was clinical.
A classic cup final it had not been, but one of the great FA Cup winners had brought a glorious climax to United’s season all the same.
The 2-1 victory was followed by the usual celebrations, with the trophy being passed along the line to glorious cheers but Van Gaal got a noticeably mixed response when the silverware reached him. United fans want a change of style but want the club to retain their faith in youngsters.
‘Youth, Courage, Success’ boasted a flag passed over the United end before kick-off. A youngster brought them success today, but what form the boardroom’s courage will now take is anybody’s guess.
Again, militants blow up Escravos gas pipeline
NIGER Delta militants in the early hours of Friday blew up another section of the Escravos gas trunk line behind Salvation City near Ogbe-Ijoh in Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta State.
It was gathered that the incident happened at about 2am and that the damaged valve supplies gas from Escravos to the Escravos-Lagos Pipeline System.
An official of the Nigerian Gas Company Limited, which owns and operates the ELPS, told our correspondent, “The part that was hit is the line break valve riser at Omadino in Itsekiri area. It is a valve on the Escravos gas pipeline. It brings gas from Escravos into the Escravos-Lagos Pipeline System. “
Asked if the ELPS has been shut down, the source said, “There are other sources of gas into the ELPS. But the incident has reduced gas flow into the ELPS.”
The reduction in gas supply to the ELPS, which supplies gas to Egbin Power Plant in Lagos, means that power generation from the plant will decline further.
Sources told newsmen that the militants used dynamites and other dangerous weapons to carry out the attack.
Although, details of the attack was still sketchy as of the time of filing this report, an official of the Delta State Government described the attack as a major blow to gas production in the country.
Although, a military source around the area confirmed the incident, the spokesman for the Joint Task Force in the region, Col. Isa Ado, could not be reached for comment.
However, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
In January, the Escravos-Warri-Abuja-Lagos pipelines came under attack, a development that affected gas supply to power firms.
An NNPC source told our correspondent, “There are two pipelines that come from Escravos and one (Escravos-Lagos Pipeline System) ends up in Lagos. That pipeline has two parts. There is a main part, which was bombed in January, while there is a 16-inch loop. When the big one was bombed in January, Chevron switched to that loop, which is smaller.”
Nigeria has seen renewed militant attacks in the Niger Delta in the last few weeks, with strikes on pipelines and oil facilities. A group calling itself the Niger Delta Avengers has claimed responsibility for most of them.
Earlier this month, a pipeline transporting crude oil to Warri and Kaduna and a 16-inch gas line, owned by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, were blown up by the Niger Delta Avengers.
Fuel price increase: Tinubu appeals to NLC to call off strike
The National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has called on the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress to call off the ongoing strike it declared to protest the current fuel price hike from N86 and N86.50k to N145 per litre.

The former Lagos State Governor pleaded with the President of the NLC, Ayuba Wabba, and other leaders of the congress to return to the negotiation table to resolve the current industrial dispute.
The Federal Government, through the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, had said on Thursday that the government could only resume talks with the NLC if the ongoing strike was called off.
Tinubu was accompanied on the visit to the Labour House venue of the meeting by the Governor of Osun State, Rauf Aregbesola, Senators Kabiru Marafa from Zamfara, Humkunyi Suleiman from Kaduna North and others.
He was received by the President of the NLC, Wabba; the Deputy Presidents of the Congress, Peters Adeyemi and Nojeem Yasin; the Chairman of the Labour and Civil Society Coalition, and a former President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Prof. Dipo Fashina; and a former Vice-President of the Congress, Isah Aremu, who is the Secretary General of the National Union of Textile Garments and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria.
The Labour leaders and their civil society allies took a break from their street protests to attend the meeting before returning to continue with the protests.
Tinubu urged the workers to continue to give the expected level of support to President Muhammadu Buhari, who according to him, would utilise available funds in the interest of the citizenry and not divert any funds for private use.
He stressed that the NLC played a major role in the emergence of the Buhari’s administration, noting that any action that would culminate in wealth dislocation was not in the interest of the citizenry.
Tinubu said that the price of the product would come down when the market was opened to competition as marketers would rather sell their products rather than hoard them in order not to owe their creditors.
He said, “My mission here is peace; my mission here is for us to return to the negotiation table. In war, like we have in Syria, what would end it after destruction? It will still end up in discussion, to have an understanding to rebuild the country.
“Let us build Nigeria, let us make Nigeria the centerpiece of Africa; let us look at the analysis and the bye products of the new refineries in this country and see. Why can’t we be the plastic centre of the continent and the world? Why is iron ore not being exploited?
“Additional investment gives you more power, gives you more influence, gives you more membership. And any dislocation of wealth in this situation will not help Nigeria. Please let us bear that in mind. It will not help Nigerians.
“Let the price be competitive. You will see, initially, it is a problem, difficult, but when the market is opened up to competition, marketers will depend on volume.
“They want to turn over their products very quickly; they don’t want them to remain in the tank farm because they owe their creditors.”
The APC chieftain appealed to the NLC, saying the party would not have won the last presidential election without its support.
He said, “You brought this government about, without your support, without your participation, we couldn’t have won the election.
“Now we have won the election, we now look at ourselves, can we manage the victory? Can we use this success to make those changes- positive and progressive change- that can work, cooperating and collaborating to make those changes to the benefit of all Nigerians?”
Tinubu added that the genuine activists in the Labour and civil society movement would agree that the issue was not about cheap oil but about the progress of the society, and the existence of disposable income that would alleviate the suffering of the people.
He said that the time had come for Nigeria to try fresh ideas as the obsolete ideas of the past had not resulted in the desired progress.
He noted that marketers had always exploited the subsidy through lack of foreign exchange, irregular supply, subsidy variation, interest and others.
Tinubu said that the population of the country and the vehicular density had moved beyond the population of the 1970s and 1980s when the four refineries were established.
He said, “We are trying to educate our children not to suffer the same problem. We want to correct their future. We want to guarantee their future.
“The same population that accommodated the early 70s and 80s is not the same population we have now. The vehicular density is not the same. And it is a sign of progress. Is our population a sign of asset or a liability? Our population is an asset to us; we are the largest economy on the continent. Why not take advantage of that? Why is diversification not being actualised? Why is it just on paper?”
Aregbesola said that they were at the Labour House ‘to appeal to the NLC under Wabba to suspend the strike and go into dialogue with government.’
He said that it was the desire of all Nigerians to have a society that would be rid of poverty and corruption.
In his response, Wabba, who said that the NLC was open to discussions, added that the congress had taken note of what Tinubu said and would take the appeal to the organs of the congress for deliberation.
Gunmen adopt Kwara APC Chairman, Secretary

Source said the two APC chieftains were returning to Kwara State after attending the ongoing case of the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, at the Code of Conduct Tribunal in Abuja.
The state Publicity Secretary of the party, Alhaji Sulyman Buhari, confirmed the incident to journalists in Ilorin, the state capital.
Buhari said, “We received a call from the telephone line of the chairman (Fulani-Balogun), telling us of the kidnapping. No ransom was mentioned and all attempts to make further enquiries from them proved abortive as the line was no longer available.
“We are on it to see if we can still establish a link with them. We have taken all necessary steps and linked up with relevant security operatives to ensure their safety and eventual release.”
It was learnt that the news of the abduction of Fulani-Balogun and Adekanye jolted the state leadership and members of the party.
More details on the incident to come later.
Man impersonates Buhari, dupes job seekers
As the Federal Government prepares to make N500bn available for poverty alleviation, Nigerians have been urged not to fall prey to groups which claim to be acting on behalf of the Government only to dupe vulnerable citizens in the process.

The warning came just as the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission arrested one Umanah Umanah for allegedly duping several job seekers.
The ICPC said in a statement by the Commissioner, Public Enlightenment, Mrs. Rasheedat Okoduwa, that the suspect and members of his syndicate floated a loan scheme tagged, “President Mohammadu Buhari Poverty Alleviation Programme.”
The commission said the fraudulent scheme offered an unspecified number of unemployed Nigerians loans to the tune of N1m on the condition that they pay between N5, 000 and N7, 000 for processing fees and a form.
The statement read in part, “We arrested the ringleader of a fraudulent group that has been swindling unsuspecting Nigerians of their money through a fraudulent loan scheme tagged ‘President Mohammadu Buhari Poverty Alleviation Programme’.
“The scheme under the auspices of Magic Project Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society offered to beneficiaries interest-free and collateral-free loans up to the tune of N1m repayable over a period of 10 years. The beneficiaries had the option of repaying weekly N2, 100 or monthly N8, 400.
“However, to secure this loan, the applicant had to pay for an application form and a processing fee of N7, 000 and N5, 000 respectively.
“Further investigations by ICPC revealed that in spite of the fairly large number of applications over the period of time the group had been operating, not one applicant had received the loan.”
Investigations by the anti-graft agency also indicated that the scheme under the parent name ‘No Burn Global Limited’ was neither registered with any financial institution, the Central Bank of Nigeria nor the Abuja Municipal Area Council and therefore did not have appropriate authorisation to carry out investment or financial services.
“It became obvious that Umanah and his group’s hoodwinking of unsuspecting clients into paying the said sums for the purpose of the supposed loan was the actual target of the whole fraud scheme,” the statement added.
The suspect whose action violates and is punishable under Section 25 of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000 will be charged to court accordingly.
The ICPC warned members of the public to be wary of dubious individuals and groups.
It urged people to always conduct checks with relevant authorities before committing their resources into business deals that promise fantastic returns.
